  • In Japan, the term "Johatsu" (蒸発), which literally means "evaporation," refers to people who deliberately disappear from their lives due to intense personal pressures like debt, family conflict, shame, or work-related stress. According to The Economic Times, these individuals often vanish without warning, leaving behind homes, jobs, and relationships to start over in complete anonymity.

To make this possible, many turn to specialized companies known as "night movers" or yonige-ya. These discreet services operate mostly under cover of darkness, helping clients pack up and relocate without alerting neighbors or family. The phenomenon gained traction in the 1990s after Japan’s economic bubble burst, leaving many in financial ruin. Sociologist Hiroki Nakamori notes that Japan’s cultural emphasis on privacy and the limited police involvement in non-criminal disappearances make it surprisingly easy for someone to vanish.

  • In Singapore, advanced urban infrastructure is tackling the growing challenge of flash floods with the introduction of smart drains.
These drainage systems are equipped with sensors that monitor rainfall intensity, water levels, and flow rates in real time. When heavy rain is detected, the smart drains automatically open their gates or adjust flow channels to direct excess water away from vulnerable areas, reducing the risk of urban flooding.

The system is linked to a central control network, allowing authorities to respond instantly to changing weather conditions. In some cases, the drains can work in coordination with detention tanks and flood barriers, creating a layered defense against sudden downpours.
This automation not only protects streets and properties but also minimizes disruption to traffic and public services.

Singapore’s approach reflects its forward-thinking urban planning, where technology and sustainability go hand in hand. By preventing water from accumulating in low-lying areas, the smart drains help protect both infrastructure and the daily lives of residents.
As climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather events, such innovations could serve as a model for other flood-prone cities worldwide.

  • This photograph, taken in 1900, captures a woman whose presence defied every expectation of her time. She wasn’t a maid or a nanny, as many assumed she was a personal bodyguard to the King of Dahomey, a powerful West African kingdom in what is now Benin, known for its elite all-female warriors:

    the Dahomey Amazons.

Standing over 2.5 meters tall by some accounts, she was said to possess extraordinary strength able to lift a grown man with a single arm and her combat skills were the stuff of legend. But rather than honoring her legacy, the colonial gaze reduced her to spectacle. British newspapers spoke of her not as a warrior, but as a novelty:

“This dark-skinned beauty… will soon visit our major cities,” they wrote, blind to the remarkable history standing before them.

Her name was Ella Abomah Williams, also known as Madame Abomah. Today, she is largely forgotten by mainstream history.

But her story endures as a powerful reminder: sometimes, heroes are hidden in plain sight., overlooked not because they lack greatness, but because the world never learned how to see it.

  • Autophagy, meaning "self-eating," is a natural cellular process in which the body recycles damaged components and proteins, particularly during fasting or periods of low nutrient intake. This biological cleanup mechanism plays a key role in maintaining cellular health by breaking down and removing dysfunctional parts before they accumulate and cause harm. Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2016 for his groundbreaking work in discovering the genes behind this essential process.

Beyond its cellular housekeeping role, autophagy has been linked to longevity and disease prevention. Studies suggest that activating autophagy through intermittent fasting or caloric restriction may reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s. As scientists continue to explore this powerful process, autophagy is emerging as a cornerstone of preventive health strategies and age-related disease research.

  • Level Up Your Blender Skills for Second Life: Two Add-ons You Need to Know About

At Wiply, we're not just a platform; we're a community. We believe in helping our creators grow and succeed, and that means sharing the tools and knowledge that can elevate your designs. If you're a Second Life designer using Blender, you know that great UV mapping is the secret to perfect textures. So, we've found two fantastic add-ons that can make your life a whole lot easier.

    1. UV Squares: For a Clean, Distortion-Free Grid

Have you ever spent ages manually adjusting your UVs to get a perfectly straight grid, only to have your texture look stretched or warped? UV Squares is here to solve that problem. This simple but powerful add-on takes any selection of faces and instantly turns them into a uniform square grid.

Why this is a game-changer for SL designers:

Fixes Bad UVs in a Click: It automatically corrects distorted UVs, ensuring your textures are applied evenly and without unsightly stretching.

Saves Hours of Tedious Work: Stop wrestling with vertices. This tool automates a time-consuming part of the UV process, so you can focus on the fun part—creating!

Perfect for Clothes and Flat Surfaces: If you’re making clothing, rugs, or any object where a perfectly straight texture is a must, this tool is your best friend.

  • A strange and silent surprise has just surfaced in Yellowstone National Park.
Between December 2024 and February 2025, a brand-new thermal pool suddenly emerged in the park’s Porcelain Basin area.

Measuring around 13 feet wide and filled with crystal-clear water at a steady 109°F, the new feature appeared without any explosion, steam burst, or warning signs to visitors on the ground.

Scientists from the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory were the first to confirm the pool’s presence, calling it one of the most fascinating geothermal surprises in years.
What makes this even more mysterious is that satellite data picked up weak seismic activity and pressure changes underground just days before the pool appeared.

However, there were no surface tremors strong enough to draw attention.

This formation hints at subtle but powerful underground shifts. Yellowstone is known as one of the most geologically active spots on Earth, sitting on top of a supervolcano with a vast reservoir of heat and magma beneath the surface.

Geothermal features such as geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles appear and disappear all the time, but a sudden new pool forming so quietly is rare.

Experts believe the thermal pool likely formed due to underground pressure rerouting groundwater to the surface through new cracks or fissures. Its clarity and warmth suggest it is stable for now, but it serves as a fresh reminder that Yellowstone’s volcanic system is constantly evolving in ways we are only beginning to understand.

Visitors are being advised to stay on marked trails and boardwalks, as ground in thermal zones can be thin and unstable.
